Scott LaFaro (1936–1961) — Double Bass. Led Village Vanguard Sessions. Worked with Bill Evans, Paul Motian.

He freed the bass from its role as a rhythm instrument. In the Bill Evans Trio he invented a way of having a conversation with the piano as an equal. His phrases are delicate and fast, and he died in a car accident at 25. The recordings he left behind are few, but their influence is immeasurable.
