About Sideman.fm

Sideman.fm is a reference that traces music through the sidemen — the musicians who played on the records. We publish credit facts (who played on an album, which records a musician appeared on) as structured pages for people, albums, and tracks.

Data Sources

Our entries are compiled primarily from the following sources:

  • MusicBrainz — structured release and personnel credit data
  • Spotify — track/album identifiers and listening links
  • Wikipedia and artists’ official sources — biographical detail
  • Music media and broadcasters (JAZZIZ, NPR, KEXP, label sites, and others) — articles and interviews
  • Books, including biographies and scholarly works

Where possible, sources are cited inline on each page.

Editorial & Curation

  • Credits distinguish leader vs. sideman roles and the instrument played.
  • Facts (credits, years, labels) are kept clearly separate from editorial writing (Notes, Episodes).
  • We favor the accuracy of confirmed facts over exhaustive coverage.

Fact-Checking

Credit accuracy is core to this site. We prefer facts corroborated across multiple sources and defer to the more reliable source when sources conflict. Errors can still occur, so every page carries a “Report an error” link. Reports are verified and incorporated.
