Roy Hargrove (b. 1969) — Trumpet, Flugelhorn. Led Habana, Earfood. Worked with Christian McBride, Russell Malone, Herbie Hancock.

From Texas. Discovered as a teenager by Wynton Marsalis. His bright, incisive tone moved easily between straight-ahead jazz and R&B/hip-hop crossovers. Wrote standards like 'Strasbourg St Denis' before his death at 49 in 2018.

Roy HargroveRoy HargroveRoy Hargroveロイ・ハーグローブ played horns on D'Angelo's Voodoo (2000), reaching listeners far outside jazz. That experience directly inspired the RH Factor, linking hard bop to hip-hop and funk in a single grammar. His conversations with Chucho Valdés in Havana were another axis. He died in 2018 at 49.

Placing HargroveRoy HargroveRoy Hargroveロイ・ハーグローブ — from the trumpet lineage — alongside Brecker, who had redefined the post-bop saxophone sound, was deliberate. Intergenerational transmission was the album's real subject.
