Alberta-born singer-songwriter known for 'Both Sides, Now' and 'Big Yellow Taxi' who increasingly drew on jazz musicians from the mid-1970s. Met Jaco Pastorius on Hejira (1976), collaborated with Charles Mingus on Mingus (1979), and performed with Jaco, Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, and Lyle Mays on Shadows and Light (1980). Maintained a 20-year collaboration with Wayne Shorter.

His fretless bass harmonics brought a jazz harmonic sensibility into the folk/pop singer-songwriter's music. The encounter set Mitchell on a path toward collaborations with Charles Mingus and Wayne Shorter, becoming the turning point toward her jazz period.
